Port Strategy: Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) has appointed SSA Marine as terminal operator for Anaklia Deep Sea Port in Georgia.
The organisation, which oversees over 250 strategic operations across five continents, was chosen following a selection process which included seven international operators.
The Seattle-based operator is one of the world’s largest terminal operators, handling 27.2m teu and managing terminals in nine countries.
The company also works in dry bulk, cruise ship operations and US railroads.
Anaklia Deep Sea Port sits on the shortest route from China to Europe, which has become a key focal point of Chinese infrastructure investments.
Plans for the development of the port include flexibility for multiple cargo and vessel types, including panamax, handymax and aframax vessels, as well as maximised facility throughput.
Construction work is expected to start on the port by the end of this year, with the operational launch of phase 1 of the development project set for 2020.
